A Spicy Movie Review - 'Loverboy' Starring Kyra Sedgewick

'Loverboy' was released on DVD today, September 19th.

A truly remarkable cast including Kyra Sedgewick, Matt Dillon, Marisa Tomei, Campbell Scott ('Singles'), and Kevin Bacon.

'Loverboy' is about Emily,
(Kyra Sedgewick) a woman who is lost within herself and wants to have a child in the worst way. She resorts to sleeping around with every Tom, Dick and Harry to try and conceive her love child. In her mind everything would be complete and she would be loved unconditionally, if she had a child.
Emily eventually succeeds in getting pregnant, the father being 'Paul' (Campbell Scott) and Emily names her child after his father.
Little Paul grows up in a very sheltered life, one completely controlled by his mother.
He has no friends. He does not attend public school or go to social functions. When Paul would question why, she would tell him that he would have more fun being together with her. She kept him in her tight grasp and did not allow him room to grow.
Emily gives her child a nickname, one I found to be quite disturbing. 'Loverboy'. Little Paul hated being called that and every time Emily says it, he reminds her that, "My name is Paul."
It's almost as though Emily almost felt of her son as the man in her life. One she could control. One she could make sure wouldn't leave her.
Emily seemed to have a separation anxiety and lack of self esteem possibly brought on by her parents (played by Kevin Bacon and Marisa Tomei) who are really into themselves, sexually and selfishly. Their priorities seem to lie within themselves, not their daughter.
It's these insecurities and fears that get Emily in the end. Consuming her and her sanity resulting in a haunting display of obsessive love.
In my opinion this movie is slow and depressing. About halfway through I wanted it to end.
Basically you spend most of the movie feeling sorry for Paul and wondering how a mother could treat her child like that. There is no excitement, no mystery no heartbeat . This is one of those movies that maybe you watch when you are alone, depressed and it's raining like hell outside. But certainly I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone.
Spicy gives it a thumbs down.

Even though I love Kyra Sedgewick and Campbell Scott being together again, ('Singles') I hope their next movie is better than this.
